The Problem with Free Will DIY Estate Planning Services. By Mark Henry, JD
They Deliver the Wrong Customer To Charities. Do-it-yourself online will preparation services are fine for the younger computer savy generation who eat, drink and socialize online but seniors are a very different generation. Seniors are your no. 1 planned giving prospects and really they are the only age group you should focus on. The simple truth is that DIY Wills are just a bridge too far with seniors. Review the websites of Free Will services and it is obvious that the vast majority of their individual users are younger people not seniors. Do you really want to spend time and resources generating planned gifts that will not mature and be not be paid to your non-profit for 30 or 40 years or more? Hardly.
DIY Estate Plans Miss The Mark With Affluent Seniors. Financially blessed seniors have relied on attorneys, accountants and other advisors to build up and protect their wealth over their lifetimes. As a result, they are not inclined to look at something as important as their estate plans as something they can risk doing on their own. The DIY estate plan model just isn’t in the affluent senior’s wheelhouse, it’s a bridge too far for them.
Additionally, Catholics are much more likely to be generous and make planned gifts when they are encouraged to do so (by stewardship minded legal advisors). Left on their own, many Catholics are not going to remember the Church in their estate plans. Proof of this is in parish surveys which show how many parishioners are dying every year and failing to make bequests to the Church.
Contrary to Catholic Teachings. The Medical Directives which FreeWill offers encourage Catholics to chose euthanasia type end-of-life medical care. Euthanasia is flatly prohibited by Catholic teachings. From FreeWills Advance Healthcare Directive Questionnaire:
• Part 4. Values

Do you have any religious or spiritual beliefs that you would like respected? We acknowledge that this specific document might not address all moral or religious views, and we encourage you to reach out to your trusted community to ensure your wishes are reflected.
